Top Quark: The Name

quark  A fundamental component of matter; symbol q. It is thought that six types exist, identified by ‘flavours’: up, down, strange, charm, top and bottom.

 

Though there has been experimental support for quarks for years now, none had been observed directly till 1996. Physicists were finally able to find the Top Quark in 1996. The discovery of the Top Quark re-defined some concepts of Particle Physics, held sacred by the scientific community.
